Seminar on ‘Tools for citation analysis and journal evaluation’

On 20 April 2017, Ms Peggy Wing-sze Ng, Assistant Librarian in the OUHK, gave a seminar on tools for analyzing citations and evaluating academic journals. Ms Ng introduced effective ways for keeping abreast of new publications, tracking networks of citations, and locating impact factors of journals in one’s field. She also introduced methods to verify the accuracy of references and citations in articles as well as ways to track the research activities of designated scholars and institutions.

Seminar on ‘The practice of getting published’

On 12 May 2017, Prof. Paul Gibbs, Director of Education Research at the University of Middlesex, gave a seminar on the practice of getting published. He noted that the idea, methodology and quality of papers are necessary but not sufficient for successful publications. Prof. Gibbs focused on ways to succeed in the publishing process, the writing of book proposals and chapters, and the handling of editorial rejections. He explored with those attending some possible means to secure a better chance of being published through improvement in presentation and extra activities that require effort beyond academic excellence.

Seminar on ‘Preparing proposals for public policy research funding scheme’

On 2 June 2017, Prof. Kin-chung Ho and Dr Kwok-wah Cheung, both members of the Public Policy Research Funding Scheme Assessment Panel, gave a seminar in which they shared their experience in funding applications for the Public Policy Research (PPR) funding scheme and the Strategic Public Policy Research (SPPR) Funding Scheme. In this seminar, Prof. Ho and Dr Cheung presented background information, the mode of operation, indicative research areas and strategic themes for both funding schemes. They also analyzed the elements of successful proposals with reference to previous projects which had received grants; the assessment of proposals; the background of the schemes’ reviewers; and the latest trends and figures of funding duration and the amount of grants.

Event organized by the Institute for Research in Open and Innovative Education (IROPINE)

Visit of academics from West University of Timisoara, Romania

On 10 May 2017, Dr Gabriela Grosseck, Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology and Dr Laura Malita, Lecturer in Social Media, both working in the West University of Timisoara in Romania, visited the OUHK’s Institute for Research in Open and Innovative Education (IROPINE). During the meeting, Dr KC Li, Director of the University Research Centre (URC) at the OUHK, introduced the two guests to the origin, composition, research areas, and activities of IROPINE. He also exchanged views with Dr Grosseck and Dr Malita on issues ranging from academic analytics, mobile and blended learning, learning design and innovative pedagogy, open education, open educational resources (OERs), and massive open online courses (MOOCs). Issues such as the acceptance and popularity of OERs and MOOCs in Romania and Hong Kong were discussed. Future collaboration between IROPINE and the two guests was also suggested during the meeting.
