Seminar on ‘English medium instruction: Which English and how much English?’

On 16 May 2017, Prof. Ernesto Macaro, Distinguished Professor of RIBiLT and Director of EMI Oxford (Centre for Research and Development in English Medium Instruction) gave a seminar on the debates surrounding issues of English medium instruction (EMI) in countries or jurisdictions where the majority of the population do not use English as their first language. In this seminar, Prof. Macaro posed and elaborated on a number of questions about the variety of English adopted, as well as the presumed purpose of adopting EMI against the backdrop of both the secondary and tertiary phases of education.

Seminar on ‘English medium instruction: A cost-benefit analysis’

On 18 May 2017, Prof. Ernesto Macaro gave another seminar on the costs and benefits of the implementation of English medium instruction (EMI) as a form of language policy and as a global phenomenon. In this seminar, Prof. Macaro discussed what has been found out about the costs and benefits of EMI in secondary and tertiary phases of education, and suggested some potential evaluation criteria that countries or jurisdictions adopting EMI should take into consideration.
