Message from the Vice President (Academic)

It gives me great pleasure to write this message for the first issue of the Research Bulletin in 2017. I formally took up my position at the University last November and have been delighted to see the research achievements of our academic units. While quality teaching remains our core focus at the OUHK, we also strive to achieve excellence in our selected strategic research areas.

The OUHK has always had an energetic team of academics and we have already established five research institutes. I strongly urge our academic staff to commit to research and make an extra effort to do well in this area, especially in sharing their results, i.e. getting published.

The University encourages our academics to embark on scholarly activities to enhance our teaching. Internally, we have funding from the President’s Advisory Committee on Research and Development and the Katie Shu Sui Pui Charitable Trust — Research and Publication Fund (Applied Research), as well as small project funding administered by individual academic units. Externally, we have a variety of funding sources, the major one being the Research Grants Council (RGC). After all, research enhanced teaching. It will not only make us better teachers, but also strengthen our academic profile.

The University actively supports research. About a year ago, we already began to appoint distinguished professors to advise our research teams; and a number of policies are in the pipeline for further support. For example, additional financial resources will be allocated to Schools for research support, especially for relief teaching; and there is a new policy to support the editing cost of academics’ research papers and the fees related to their publication in proper refereed journals..

I am also glad to see that our URC is making every effort to promote research and that this bulletin serves the functions of sharing relevant news and introducing useful research resources to colleagues. I look forward to seeing more and more of our academics’ achievements in this bulletin.

Looking ahead, the University will continue to provide an environment conducive to conducting research. I have no doubt that our research culture is taking root and I look forward to seeing enhancements in both quantity and quality.
