Seminar on ‘How to Write Research Proposals for the Government’s Competitive Research Funding Scheme’

Prof. Geoffrey Blowers, Former Director of the Research Office at Hong Kong Shue Yan University, gave a seminar on 22 July on how to prepare research proposals for application for the Research Grants Council’s (RGC) funding. Prof. Blowers began by providing an overview of the three funding schemes offered by the RGC, and explained their assessment criteria. He then discussed in detail how to write each section of an RGC funding proposal.

The seminar also covered how the final score of a research proposal is determined by the assessment panel and how applicants can best strategize their budgets.

Seminar and Workshop on ‘Mobile Learning Research in Specific Disciplines’

Prof. Gwo-Jen Hwang, Chair Professor at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, conducted a seminar and a workshop on 23 August on the design consideration for mobile learning research in specific disciplines. In the seminar, Prof. Hwang introduced the practical applications of mobile learning studies for various disciplines, including social studies, natural science, chemistry, language learning, computer engineering, and nursing education. Strategies for designing these studies, as well as publishing findings in academic journals, were presented.

In the workshop, Prof. Hwang offered concrete guidelines on how to develop an innovative mobile learning study. Various ways to add innovations into mobile learning research were introduced, including: lead-in of new technologies; investigation of seldom-discussed issues; lead-in of new strategies or tools; the use of mobile learning approaches for seldom-considered subjects; and the use of mobile learning approaches in particular domains.

Seminars on ‘Preparation of Proposals for Research Funding’

Two seminars were held on preparing proposals for research funding. The first seminar was given by Prof. Paul Kwok on 29 September. He offered points to note when preparing research proposals, such as providing adequate justifications for budget items and compliance with all the requirements of funding bodies.

The second seminar was given by Dr K C Li and Dr Billy Wong from the University Research Centre on 5 October. It covered strategies for research success and findings generated from an analysis of common problems found in proposals. The seminar also covered points to note when completing an application form for funding, and considerations when writing a budget plan and obtaining research ethics or safety approval.
