Recent Event in the Research Institute for Bilingual Learning and Teaching (RIBiLT)

Seminar on ‘Code-switching in the Chinese Writing Classroom’

Code-switching is a common phenomenon, especially in multilingual and multicultural communities. In English language teaching classrooms, code-switching is used by students and, occasionally, even by teachers. In the context of learning Chinese as a foreign language, code-switching has not been widely studied. Ms Cheung Ching Ching, a doctoral student in the OUHK, gave a seminar on 12 August 2016, entitled ‘Code-switching as Peer Scaffolding in L2 Chinese Writing: A Case of Ethnic Minority Learners in a Hong Kong Secondary School’, in which she presented a study of code-switching in the Chinese writing classroom with non-native Chinese language learners.

The study covered the types and functions of code-switching used by Chinese language learners and the problems they face when using it. The results showed how code-switching helps students to understand the content of writing and build on the understanding they developed in group discussion. The results will provide Chinese teachers with a heightened awareness of the use of code-switching in classrooms.
