Seminar on Professional Communication Skills for Research Publication (Creating and Managing Research Space)

Speaker: Professor Vijay Bhatia, President, Asia-Pacific LSP and Professional Communication Association

With the recent emphasis on research and publication in higher education, professional communication skills are seen as key contributors to academic performance in disciplinary and interdisciplinary research. Drawing on recent research on the analysis of journal articles in various disciplines (Bhatia, 1993, 2004, 2010; Swales, 1990, 2004), Professor Bhatia will identify and discuss the role of rhetorical structuring and a number of other academic skills and strategies for successful performance in disciplinary and interdisciplinary research publication.

Researchers who need to analyse a lot of data would find SPSS and AMOS very useful. This seminar provides an application-oriented introduction to advanced statistical methods available in SPSS Statistics and AMOS for data analysts and researchers. You will review a variety of advanced statistical techniques and discuss situations in which each technique would be used, the assumptions made by each method, how to set up the analysis, as well as how to interpret the results. This seminar includes a broad range of techniques for predicting both continuous and categorical outcomes, as well as methods to cluster cases, create statistical groupings of variables, and find similar cases using a large set of variables. You will gain an understanding of when and why to use these various techniques as well as how to apply them with confidence and interpret your output.

This seminar will focus on the fundamentals of working in NVivo, from creating a project, importing your material (whether it be text, PDFs, Datasets, Web pages, media or image files) and coding. It will also cover the many tools that can be used to explore and ask questions of your data, generate visualisations and share your findings.
